The fat cat on the mat
may seem to dream
of nice mice that suffice
for him, or cream;
but he free, maybe,
walks in thought
unbowed, proud, where loud
roared and fought
his kin, lean and slim,
or deep in den
in the East feasted on beasts
and tender men.
The giant lion with iron
claw in paw,
and huge ruthless tooth
in gory jaw;
the pard dark-starred,
fleet upon feet,
that oft soft from aloft
leaps upon his meat
where woods loom in gloom -
far now they be,
fierce and free,
and tamed is he;
but fat cat on the mat
kept as a pet
he does not forget.

Le gros chat sur la natte
peut sembler rêver
de jolies souris qui lui suffisent,
ou de crème ;
mais, libre, peut-être,
il marche en pensée
sans jamais s'incliner, fier, là où bruyamment
hurlaient et combattaient
ceux de son espèce, maigres et minces,
ou bien, profondement dans leur repaire
dans l'Est, festoyaient de bêtes sauvages
et de tendres hommes.
Le lion géant à la
griffe d'or à la patte
et à la grande machoire sans pitié
dans sa bouche sanglante ;
le léopard sombrement constellé,
léger sur ses pattes,
qui souvent doucement de haut
saute sur sa viande
là où les bois s'estompent dans les ténèbres -
aussi loin soient-ils,
fiers et libres,
aussi apprivoisés soit-il ;
mais le gros chat sur sa natte
gardé comme animal de compagnie,
il n'oublie pas.
