.R.R. Tolkien s'inspira du Moyen-Âge pour élaborer une critique du monde moderne dans son récit fantasy. Il le fit toutefois sous la forme d'une littérature moderne avec des implications post-modernes et avec un succès commercial gigantesque. Ces trois essais analysent ce paradoxe et son importance dans la compréhension de l'intersection entre les critiques traditionnelles à l'encontre du modernalisme et celles relevant de la contre-culture. Cette approche aide à expliquer la popularité de ses travaux, la manière dont ils continuent à être rapportés aux enjeux du vingt-et-unième siècle, et leur importance littéraire contestée dans le monde universitaire.
