Le « romantisme » a été fréquemment considéré comme une influence importante de Tolkien. Toutefois, une analyse globale portant sur la relation complexe entre le travail du professeur et les différentes variétés de « romantisme » reste un souhait. Les réalisations de Tolkien comme philologue, médiéviste, poète et auteur n'auraient pas été possibles sans les modifications apportées par le romantisme dans les domaines de l'art, la musique, la philologie, la littérature, la philosophie et la politique, à la fin du XVIIIe et du début jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle - développements (souvent nationalement diversifiés) qui sont habituellement regroupés sous le titre de « romantisme ».

C'est le but de la septième conférence de la Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft d'explorer non seulement les emprunts de Tolkien au romantisme dans le sens large du terme, mais aussi pour discuter de son importance en tant qu'auteur et érudit qui a persisté dans la poursuite et la modification des impulsions « romantiques » dans un milieu intensément « anti-romantique ».
