Dans Green Suns and Faërie, l'auteur Verlyn Flieger, l'une des plus éminentes spécialistes de Tolkien, présente une sélection de ses meilleurs articles — dont certains inédits — sur divers sujets relatifs à Tolkien.

Les essais sont répartis en trois sections distinctes. La première explore les idées de Tolkien sur la sub-création, la création d'un univers secondaire et sa relation au monde réel; la seconde se tourne vers le remaniement de la tradition littéraire médiévale par Tolkien; et la troisième ancre fermement son oeuvre au sein du 20e siècle et de la littérature « moderniste ». Flieger, à l'aide d'analyses allant des concepts du héros chez Tolkien à la nature fort peu comprise de la dernière énigme de Bilbo dans Le Hobbit, dévoile Tolkien comme un homme de savoir médiéval et de sensibilité moderne, profondément concerné par le passé et le futur, les regrets et les espoirs, les triomphes et tragédies, et par-dessus tout par les difficultés et dilemmes profonds de son époque troublée.

Pris dans leur totalité, ces essais esquissent un approfondissement académique majeur de l'œuvre du maître de la fantasy. Green Suns and Faërie est voué à devenir une pierre angulaire des études sur Tolkien.

Verlyn Flieger est professeur d'Anglais à l'Université du Maryland où elle donne des cours sur Tolkien, la littérature moderne et médiévale et de mythologie comparée. Elle est l'auteur de trois ouvrages sur Tolkien : Splintered Light, A Question of Time, et Interrupted Music (tous publiés par The Kent State University Press). Elle a également publié une édition critique de la nouvelle Smith de Grand Wooton, et une version enrichie de notes et de commentaires de l'un des essais théoriques le plus influent de Tolkien : « Du Conte de Fées ».
