« The Hobbit » in Tolkien’s Legendarium: Essays on the Novel’s Influence on the Later Writings

u colloque « Celebrating The Hobbit », qui se tint à l’université de Valparaiso en 2013 pour célébrer le soixante-quinzième anniversaire de la publication de ce livre et le premier opus des adaptations du Hobbit par Peter Jackson, deux conférences plénières furent données. « Anchoring the Myth: The Impact of The Hobbit on Tolkien’s Legendarium », de John Rateliff, fournit de nombreux exemples de l’influence du Hobbit sur le Légendaire de Tolkien. « Tolkien’s French connections », de Verlyn Flieger, discuta les influences françaises qui marquèrent le développement de Bilbo Baggins et de ses aventures. Après des discussions avec les deux conférenciers et d’autres présentateurs, il devint apparent qu’un livre se focalisant sur les influences du Hobbit sur le développement subséquent du Légendaire de Tolkien comblerait un manque criant.

Cette collection d’essais remplit ce besoin. Avec les articles de Rateliff et de Flieger, ce livre présente deux chapitres sur l’évolution de la race des Nains, deux chapitres sur le Jour de Durin et le calendrier lunaire des Nains et onze chapitres sur différents thèmes en lien avec les révisions et les influences croisées entre le Hobbit et le Légendaire de Tolkien.
