e septième volume de L'Histoire de la Terre du Milieu poursuit l'étude des brouillons du Seigneur des Anneaux débutée dans le tome précédent, The Return of the Shadow. On y voit naître la Lothlórien, les Ents, le Rohan, et la trahison de Saruman en sa forteresse d'Isengard. Ce volume contient également la toute première carte du nord-ouest de la Terre du Milieu à la fin du Troisième Âge, déjà très proche de la version finale.
